A film crew spent 18 months travelling the world to capture pictures to form the backdrops. Huge efforts were devoted to making sure that the lemurs' hair looked realistic. But why bother with lemurs? After all, there were very few mammals alive - if any - when the dinosaurs met their end soon after in geological terms a meteor strike about 65 million years ago.

Aladar soon reaches the herd as Kron is about to make them climb the rocks. They fight and as Kron is about to strike Aladar, Neera intervenes by ramming into Kron and knocking him to the ground. She then walks beside Aladar as they lead the herd to the Nesting Grounds, leaving Kron behind.
The Carnotaur then comes and the herd begins to panic. Aladar says that if they scatter, they'll be eaten. Then he tells them to stand together. As Aladar faces the Carnotaur, Neera and the other dinosaurs in the herd join in.
Bellowing at the Carnotaur, they force it back and as Aladar keeps bellowing at it, the rest of the herd walk past safely. The Carnotaur then turns its attention to Kron and it goes after him. Neera and Aladar follow close behind. Kron runs up the rocks and finds a cliff as the Carnotaur attacks. It throws him against a rock and is about to finish him off when Neera starts to shove the Carnotaur.
It shoves Neera back and as it's about to get her, Aladar comes in. The Carnotaur pushes Aladar, but the resilient Iguanodon doesn't give up. He pushes the Carnotaur to the edge of the cliff. The ground beneath it crumbles and the Carnotaur falls to its death. After saying, "Welcome home," the herd rushes past Aladar and Neera in joy. Sometime later, Aladar and Neera become mates and have a nest of their own.
Their first egg hatches as the lemurs, Eema, Baylene, Url, and a couple of orphaned Iguanodons that Neera had looked after come over to greet the hatchling. After the baby hatches, Aladar bellows in joy, followed by his friends, and finally the whole herd.
This was presumably done for dramatic effect and wouldn't be the first time such a change has been made the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park are also several times the size of the actual animals. Both Aladar and his newborn child urinate on Yar after hatching. It is doubtful dinosaurs could urinate like this. Like their modern relatives, they most likely excreted a substance called uric acid, which wouldn't exactly look like mammalian urine, as seen in the movie, more like bird droppings. Throughout the film, all of the Iguanodonts including Aladar, Neera, Kron and Bruton are shown running on all four legs.
According to modern paleontological theories, however, it is likely they would've been able to rear up on their hind legs to run, if they chose. The small, lizard-like Longisquama is depicted as a chameleon that's able to glide through the air with two rows of elongated scales coming out of its side. In reality, it most likely wasn't a chameleon-like animal and only had a single row of spikes on its back, meaning it couldn't glide.
It also lived in the Triassic, well over million years before the movie's timeframe. The two old Iguanodons, Kron and Bruton, have what appear to be horn-like ridges on their nose, which real Iguanodon didn't have.
The raptors in this film are scaly, even though in real life they were covered in feathers. The movie makers knew this, but animating feathers at the time proved too difficult.
Only when the movie was almost done did animation software developments allow for feathers to be animated, but by that time it was too late to include them. In one scene where Zini is trying to wake up Aladar by pulling on his eye, Aladar's sclera appears black, as the white of his eye had not been rendered.
Shortly after, the tail of one of the lemurs clips into his side.
