Why is abbey road zig zag

In the United Kingdom, lollipop men or women crossing guards frequently attend zebra crossings in school hours. In the Netherlands , Germany , Scandinavia and most other European countries, pedestrians have right of way if they are still on the curb but about to enter the zebra crossing. In North America , zebra crossings are almost exclusively called crosswalks, and in most North American cities, crossing in an area of the street other than the crosswalk is called jaywalking and, though rarely enforced, is technically a misdemeanor offense.

In New Zealand , motorists are required to give way to pedestrians. If crossing the road within 20m of a zebra crossing pedestrians must use the crossing. It is painted yellow and black. In the UK, it allows cyclists to cross in a central area of the road without dismounting, and motorists must give way to both cyclists and pedestrians.

My friend likes to goof off when he crosses it - he zigzags the car, trying to mimic the lines. I think you are not supposed to cross the road in the area marked by the zig-zags, only on the actual crossing.

But the main purpose of the zig-zags is to provide a zone of good visibility each side of the crossing so that drivers can see if anyone is waiting to cross. I found it amusing that a software engineer might have slipped a little homage into the site too when I noticed a while back. To the OP, I guess disorientating might serve to be a warning. Much like how I guess the lines dividing lanes on a motorway are laid down differently to help keep drivers flowing a little better where the road may diverge or merge like this.

This prevents the scenario where a motorist is suddenly confronted with a pedestrian emerging behind a parked car and walking onto the crossing.

You are not allowed to park in this zone, for any reason and most important, you are not allowed to overtake. Could everyone please stop giving accurate information about this?

Or at least can we close this thread and lock it? View other petitions from this government. As the Abbey Road Crossing is a totally unique crossing in the world, I think the simplistic and original look should be preserved.

There are too many road markings, I think it could benefit from the removal of the ZIG ZAG lines reverting to the formerly straight lines.

People are aware of the fans and tourists who are at the crossing everyday, the place is constantly monitored by CCTV, so there is no concern of parking on the crossing, that is common sense.
